Episode 44: Demystifying NGA and AKC Greyhound Breed Standards

NGA and AKC registered greyhounds are the same, but different.

The 142nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show begins days after this episode drops. Many adopters of former racing greyhounds often wonder what the difference is between National Greyhound Association (NGA) greyhounds and American Kennel Club (AKC) show greyhounds. They’re surprised to learn that they’re the same breed. However, there are differences between NGA greyhounds and greyhounds who meet the AKC breed standards.

In this episode discover what differentiates greyhounds meeting the AKC breed standard from NGA greyhounds.

Episode 42: Kids & Greyhounds––Training Both to Live Together (Part 1, 12 Don’ts)

“Kid friendly dogs” live best with “dog friendly kids.”

You often hear some dogs described as being “good with kids” or “kid friendly.” But there’s a flip side to this coin: any child living with or visiting a dog, including a greyhound, needs to be “good with dogs” or “dog friendly.”

We’ve divided this episode into two parts. In Part 1, which is this episode, you’ll hear the 12 “Don’ts” of kids and greyhounds. In Part 2, dropping next week, you’ll hear the “Dos.”

Greyhounds and kids do mix quite well. In this and the next episode, discover how to help keep both the kids that live with you and/or visit your home, AND your greyhound, safe.

Episode 41: Here Kitty, Kitty––Greyhounds & Cats Living in Harmony

Introducing your new greyhound to your cat.

Many people are surprised when they discover that there are greyhounds that live peaceful lives with cats. Some greyhounds and cats are even best friends. But make no mistake: for thousands of years, greyhounds have been and are skilled predators with several physical advantages, including their speed and precision. Introducing a greyhound to a cat should be done mindfully. The same goes for thereafter when greyhounds and cats live together. In this episode, you’ll hear how to properly do the introduction, along with the things you can do to help continue keeping pup and kitty safe.

Episode 40: ‘Sup with Corns & Greyhounds

The bane of many greyhounds: Corns.

Corns are only found in sighthounds, including greyhounds. Not every greyhound gets them, but when they do, they’re extremely painful. And treating them can be hit or miss. In this episode, we sit down with Patty Comerford to get the skinny on theories as to what corns are, how to detect them, and a myriad of treatments that may put the bounce back in your greyhound’s step.

Episode 39: Art, Courtesy of Your Greyhound–A Conversation with Artist Nicole Peters

Delight in this unique art created by your greyhound.

We all do it. That is, cleaning our dogs’ nose prints and smudges from our windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces. Many people refer to this as their dogs’ “nose art.” In this episode, we speak with Missouri artist Nicole Peters. She created a unique way to capture this nose art that is not only stunning, but also a way to keep your greyhound’s art with you forever––even after you’ve taken out the glass cleaner.

Commissioning Nicole’s “Dog Knose Art” is surprisingly affordable. In this episode, we have a conversation with her about her technique and the greyhounds she fosters for Greyhound Pet Adoption in Springfield, Missouri.
